Hundreds, thousands and a million in Greek
Past a hundred, Greek adds three things to learn: a ν that comes and goes on εκατό, a family of hundreds ending -κόσια, and thousands that are feminine. Try any number below, then read how each part works.

The hundreds
A hundred on its own is εκατό. When more of the number follows, inside 101 to 199, it takes a final ν: εκατόν ένα, εκατόν πενήντα. The Triantafyllidis dictionary limits εκατόν to exactly that case, numerals of two or more words from 101 to 199, so a hundred before χιλιάδες stays εκατό: 100,000 is εκατό χιλιάδες.
From 200 the hundreds are single words ending in -κόσια, and they behave like adjectives: διακόσια βιβλία (books, neuter), διακόσιοι μαθητές (pupils, masculine), διακόσιες σελίδες (pages, feminine). Counting, they are neuter.

χίλια and χιλιάδες
One thousand is χίλια, itself an adjective (χίλιοι άνθρωποι, χίλιες δραχμές, χίλια χρόνια, the dictionary's own examples). From two thousand, Greek counts thousands with the feminine noun χιλιάδες, and whatever stands in front of it agrees in the feminine where it can. That is the rule English speakers miss most: it turns τρία into τρεις and διακόσια into διακόσιες inside a number.

A million
ένα εκατομμύριο is the top of what this site reads and of what the worksheets draw. εκατομμύριο is a neuter noun, so the number before it stays neuter: δύο εκατομμύρια, τρία εκατομμύρια. Above that come δισεκατομμύριο (a billion) and τρισεκατομμύριο (a trillion).
Years
Years are read as ordinary numbers, so they follow every rule above: 1821 is χίλια οχτακόσια είκοσι ένα, the year of the War of Independence; 2004 is δύο χιλιάδες τέσσερα; 2026 is δύο χιλιάδες είκοσι έξι. The dates page puts them into full dates.
Questions teachers and learners ask
How do you say a thousand in Greek?
χίλια (HEE-lya). It is the one thousand that has its own word; from two thousand Greek counts thousands with the noun χιλιάδες: δύο χιλιάδες, τρεις χιλιάδες. 1,500 is χίλια πεντακόσια, with no word for one in front.
Why is 3,000 τρεις χιλιάδες and not τρία χιλιάδες?
Because χιλιάδες is a feminine noun, and three agrees with the noun it counts. The feminine of τρία is τρεις, of τέσσερα τέσσερις, and the hundreds turn -κόσια into -κόσιες. So 300,000 is τριακόσιες χιλιάδες. Numbers that do not change for gender, such as δύο, πέντε or είκοσι, look the same in front of χιλιάδες.
How do you say a million in Greek?
ένα εκατομμύριο (E-na e-ka-to-MEE-ree-o). εκατομμύριο is a neuter noun, so two million is δύο εκατομμύρια and three million τρία εκατομμύρια, with the neuter three. A billion is ένα δισεκατομμύριο.
How do Greeks write 1,000 in figures?
With a point for thousands and a comma for decimals: 1.000, 25.000, and 3,50 for three and a half. That is the convention you will see on Greek price tags and documents. The worksheets on this site print figures the English way (1,000), because they are made for English-medium classrooms; the money page shows the Greek way.
